1. "Without Richard Parker, I wouldn't be alive today to tell my story". (Martel, 164 )
At first, this quotation might sound bizarre saying the only reason a lanky teenage Indian boy survived on a life boat was because of a 450 pound carnivore’s tiger being with him the whole time, but Pi explains himself persuasively. The presence of Richard Parker, though initially terrifying, eventually comforts him and saves him from total internal loneliness. Moreover, the necessity and persistence of training and taking care of the tiger fills up Pi’s long, empty days keeping him busy and helps time pass. 2. “No whip could have inflicted a more painful lash.” (Martel, 344) This quote really explains how much pain Pi felt living on the life boat and losing his family. When someone says that no whip could have inflicted more pain than what had happened to him, it means he was mentally hurt and there is no band-aid for that type of pain. This line is important in the story because it gives readers a really good understanding of how hurt Pi was, and it helped the reader feel true empathy for the pain the young boy went through. 3. "I have a story that will make you believe in god". (Martel, 10) This quote is said by Francis Adirubasamy to the author. When someone first reads this phrase, the reader might think the Life of Pi is a story about believing in a religion but it isn't. The story is about believing and having faith is something that cannot be seen with your eyes and can only be seen with your mind. In the end of the story, the reader gets a choice if they would want to believe in God or not.
