Allusion: “Just wait till we’re alone. You’re the next goat!” (Martel, 43)
This allusion was effective as it got its meaning out in a humorous but still in a deliberate way. This phrase was used by Ravi (Pi’s older brother) when he was threatening Pi that he would "kill him". It is used as a way of threating Pi because earlier in the story Pi's father put a live goat in front of Richard Parker (Tiger), where it was slaughtered, killed and eaten in front of their eyes as a punishment.
Simile: " Life on a boat isn't much of a life. It is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces. The elements couldn't be more simple, nor the stakes more higher. " (Martel, 217)
In this quote, life on the life boat is said as being unenjoyable and each day is like a play in chess. Everyday must be thought out and planned or else Pi would die. Chess isn't a fast moving game, these games can take hours and hours of time but if the wrong move is made, it could result in defeat which in Pi's case is death. When Pi says "it is a game with few pieces", he is relating to the animals on the boat with him. An example where Pi makes a decision to better his odds of winning the game/ surviving, is when he decides to take care of Richard Parker by feeding him consistently so Richard Parker doesn't decide to make his next lunch Pi. Pi being in the middle of the ocean with not many supplies says that "the elements couldn't be more simple", however, he is trying to survive by himself with a tiger out in the ocean which explains why the stakes couldn't be much higher.
“Truly I was to be the next goat.” (Martel, 110)
In this quote, Pi is looking back to when his father taught him a lesson of getting to close and friendly with animals. Pi's father tied a goat to the cage that Richard Parker stayed in. Pi, his brother Ravi, and their parents watched as the tiger devoured the goat. Now, when Pi is left on a small boat with the same tiger that killed the goat in front of him, he says to himself that he will truly be the next goat. I felt connected to this quote because as a kid, my grandfather did something similar to this with me. The 2 things that were different was 1, I had to kill a bird instead of a tiger killing the goat ,and 2 my grandfather didn't do this to frighten me, he made me do this as a small step for me going from a boy to a man.
